There are so many sites and places to buy a corset.  While custom is of course best, when starting out it's quite an expensive leap to make off the bat. So here are some "Off The Rack" corsets I have and would recommend.

My first corset was from this store called http://www.timeless-trends.com/

I have the one pictured above "Emerald Brocade Under-Bust". By the way when starting out I recommend an under-bust as apposed to over-bust. Unless you are around a C cup or smaller under-busts can be hard to get a good fit in. Even then I would still start with an under-bust.

This is a beautiful corset. I believe all of Timeless Trends corsets are cut from the same basic pattern and construction so you are really only deciding on the fabric. They are usually around $99 dollars, (sometimes less, check their sale section!) which is an amazing deal because they are extremely well made. They have a lifetime guarantee. shipping was really fast too.

The only down side for me is they have more of a modern hourglass shape. I can't cinch my waist as much as I am capable because there isn't quite enough room for my big hips. I have about a  25" to 26" waist and 38" hips. The one I own is a 24" corset and I feel comfortable with it laced all the way, but It does pinch a little at the hips. I could also see displacement bulge being an issue if I went smaller.

This is one of my absolute favorites! The Morticia Corset from What Katie Did.

http://www.whatkatiedid.us.com/products/corsets (this is their US site)

I love the curves this corset has. The hip gores leave plenty of room for my big hips so I can lace down much better. It's a long line corset so it holds everything in nicely down below.  WKD corsets are all so beautiful and they have so many beautiful vintage inspired styles. They are not made for training or tight lacing. I own a 20" Morticia, I usually only lace down around 23". But because of the curvy construction a 23" waist looks like a 20" waist . It was around $275 last I checked but they sometimes have great deals in their Ebay store and in their LA and London shops.

My other favorite is my Josephine under-bust by Isabella Corsetry  http://www.corsetmaker.com/cat/Very similar to the Morticia with the hip gores and and all around curves. The Morticia has more of a V shaped ribcage, this one is slightly more curved over the ribs. It's also a little more sturdy for training. I use this one most often for daily wear. It is in their immediate shop for $175, I got mine on sale for $140 a few months ago.

Ok add to this list ladies...

Ok, so I have a question. I noticed that many of you, including the wonderful one who started this, say you have corsets you wear for "daily wear/use". When you say that are you wearing the corset over clothing or as an actual under-garment? I'm curious as to how to basically get away with wearing a corset as an undergarment without it showing underneath the clothes.....Are any of these, including the Morticia, good for that? Or are they for over use only? Also do you find that these corsets also help with the dreaded lower abdomen area?

Hey Lura,

I don't wear my corset as outerwear but I wear and sleep in my corset daily. I hide the lines of the corset with good fitting clothing, but you can also add some shapewear to smooth any lines you don't want to anyone to see. Maybe a little shapewear for the bottom. I have to wear all black at work so I also protect from any staining with slips which also blur the lines. Of course if you're going to wear something really really fitted go I'd either go without or wear a corselette.

And then sometimes I don't care if the lines of my laces show, I figure people show a lot worse things nowadays.

I must tell you where I bought my two corsets. It is from Corsetdeal.com. They are made in India and seem to be made fairly well. I don't wear them all that often. But they certainly help give me that hourglass shape. And the amazing thing is their prices. I think I spent about $80 in total for my two corsets. And I just checked out their website and they have a special, 4 corsets for $150!

Thank you for starting this thread Mary Lucas, it's really helpful :)

I remember when my hubby and I were at Viva this past year I was amazed to see so many ladies wearing underbust corsets over their pinup dresses. I'm still pretty new to the pinup lifestyle and I'd never even thought of that look before but WOW, it was such an awesome rockabilly look for so many women.

There was one woman I remember that stands out, she was in the audience at the Wanton Women Burlesque Show. She was wearing a bright blue underbust corset with white trim and white heavy plastic clips at the front that matched her blue pinup dress with white trim.

I wish I'd asked here where she bought her corset because I would LOVE to buy one that bright blue. I guess it could have been custom made too, does anyone remember seeing anything at all like that for sale on any website? I haven't been able to find it on Timeless Trends, What Katie Did, Corset Story or Orchard Corset.

Would you happen to have a picture? I spend all my free time corset shopping lately, maybe I could help you!

I adore Isabella Corsetry. I bought the Josephine in burgandy peony silk, with matching gold silk. What's great about her is she's pretty close to where I live, but she offers a lot of different sihlouhettes. a lot of folks don't realize but there are different cuts of corsets. The Josephine really gives that edwardian curvature that shape extended in popularity in the 40s and 50s too.

I found timeless trends a good starting point but the underbust was long for me. I have a short torso, so every time I would bend over their style of corsets would push onto my bladder. Not very comfortable. I got tired of it within three months then switched to Isabella Corsetry.

Isabella offers meetings so she can measure and fit you at no charge. If you're far away she'll make a mock up one for you. She offers off the rack styles (already made and sized) but she offers custom and made to order corsets. When I went to see her she noted that I need my corsets to be shorter in length and she didn't charge me as a custom she charged me as a "made to order" and gave me a cheaper rpice than her website.

I'm certainly going back to her for any corset I need!

After months and months of lurking, I finally decided to take the plunge and order the WKD Morticia corset.  I'm afraid it might be too long on me as I have a short torso, but I preferred the curve on it to the WKD Mae, which is shorter.  I fell in love with a Dark Garden corset with sheer panels, but it's custom made and for my first corset I think I just need a good off the rack one.  I was so inspired to get a black underbust from the pictures here of the ladies wearing their DD L'amour dresses with black underbust corset - what a stunning look.

I looked at Isabella Corsetry web site as well, but I've spent so much time looking at WKD that I'm more comfortable ordering online from them. WIsh me luck...

I felt kinda bad because i haven't taken any pictures at all corseted or even my progress :P That may have been due to laziness but here's a picture of me in my Isabella Corsetry, if anyone's interested in her corsets.

Thanks so much Ruth! I really do lover her corsetry too and the Josephine is my favorite. What I also like about the Josephine is that it goes over the hips slightly giving a little more control, but she can amke it so it doesn't come down too long on a person and press against them in an uncomfortable way.

That is gorge!  Looks terrific on you.  I'm a little nervous about buying any corsetry online because it's too hard to know if their cut will fit properly.  I love the waist definition but am concerned about where it will hit me on the hip line and whether it will create a bulge where i don't want one.  Nevertheless, yours looks great.  Do you wear it mostly as a foundation garment underneath clothes, or as outerwear?

Hey Nanette Nova, I wasn't sure who you were directing this question to. But as for myself this is my foundation garment and I mostly treat it like underwear. I suppose I could and even would use it as outwear occasionally, but I feel like I'd get stopped and asked questions all the time so I do tend to treat it as underwear. But I do wear it day and night. You know what else helps to get a good cut; to decide what figure you really want.I already had an hour glass figure but I waned to emphasize it.

I decided that the old edwardian figure and 40s wasp waist were very much related so I went with an Edwardian underbust. Also this style gives more control by covering the hips a bit. I found the ones that didn't copver my hips cut into them and made a weird transition from waist to hip.

For your measurements, you can have a tailor take them for you and sending a full body picture to the corset maker will also give them an idea about the length you need. Isabella knew just by looking at me that she's have to adjust the pattern and shorten it for me.

Another things is woman back in the day left 2 inch gap in their corsets in the back, they were looking to get it closed all the way like tightlacing. So even if you make the back pieces meet, you may still be 2 inch bigger than your corset. Uncorseted I'm a 24in, but corseted I'm a 22in. I'll have to eventually move on to a 20 in corset, which will in turn allow me to have a true 22 in waist. At least this is what I've reasearched and expierence to some degree. Tricky tricky.

It should be pointed out that traditionally corsets were not worn to sleep in and probably shouldn't be from a medical standpoint.

When you wear a corset you DO put a great deal of pressure on your bowel/intestines, which not only slows blood flow to those areas but the general compression can slow your digestive system considerably, depending on how tightly you lace. By not sleeping in a corset, the bowel has a chance (6 hours, on average, which is enough to process at least one meal) to expand and get more blood flow, which keeps things running smoothly. Without this chance to relax, there is more of a likelihood of constipation from the slow-down of the digestive tract, even if you eat a high-fiber diet and take probiotic supplements or eat a good deal of yogurt. Prolonged constipation can lead to impacted bowel and that can be a major problem.

From the standpoint of an investment, corsets themselves need time to relax, otherwise you put constant strain on the seams. Even people who tightlace will tell you that it's important to let your corset "breathe" and that if you only have one, you should always let it rest overnight if you want it to last. At the very least, if you wear a corset at bedtime, it should be loosened to aid in bowel function.

This is just a part of corset-wearing that I've heard others address elsewhere, and that my husband (a doctor) has advised people on. YMMV, of course - I just thought I'd put that info out there, because I know of people who started corset-wearing with much enthusiasm and decided that they could get to their goal faster if they wore their corsets to sleep in, as well as during the day. Not everyone encounters problems, but they are real and worth considering.
