Hi ladies,

I just picked up some gorgeous wool crepe and wool suiting from the post office, that I'm going to turn into pencil skirts. With other fabrics I have bought before, pretreating has been straight forward since they could be washed.

According to Gertie's book the wool fabrics should be steam-pressed before you start sewing. And she says either take it to the dry cleaner or do it yourself.

I stopped by the dry cleaner afterwards since I had to drop off a pair of BL Highwaisted pants and shorts (which made me wonder if I should take the risk and wash them next time...), and asked. It turned out to be quite expensive (approx. $42 per piece :/ but maybe its worth it), so I think I'm going to try myself.

Apparently wool crepe is a little tricky too/shrinks a lot. Gertie links to this page for wool crepe, so I think I'm going to try following those instructions.

What I'm wondering is if any of you have done this before, and have any advice. Please share if you have any experience! Thank you! :)

I'll check this for you with my 92yo Mum who has sewn all her life. I remember her putting bolts of fabric in the bath to preshrink before making up. Don't know about wool crepe though. I'll find out.

Thank you! I've been told to be very careful as wool easily changes shape when damp or wet, so I think I'll have to set aside a day or two to be sure I have enough time to be careful enough. Whatever happens, I'll have some new experience at least (but hopefully it will not be ruined in the process!).
