Last week I wrote a post about the wonders of PUG's tops.  So logically, I had to post about skirts next, in a blog filled with everyone's favorite self-photo-in-the-mirror camera shot and cut-off-head shots.  Because it doesn't matter how great the top is, if you're walking around without something covering your bottom, no one is going to notice your fabulous new top, you can't possibly sit down anywhere in public, and you will most likely get in trouble with some sort of law enforcement.  Fortunately, PUG has a variety of great options with various fits to suit everyone.

First up, pencil skirts!

This is a tricky area... a skirt should be simple, right?  Not if you're me.  My body is admittedly a bit out of proportion;  I have a 24" waist, and at my actual hip bone I'm 33", but like so many other women, guess what?  I have thighs.  And they're wonderful for sitting on, but for whatever reason, most skirt designers refuse to acknowledge them and want my widest part to be right at the hip bone and then taper down.  My widest part, at my lower hip, is 37".  24" to 37" is a big jump, and I don't expect every style/cut of pencil skirt to accommodate for that, but not being able to find ANYTHING that fits my hips and my waist simultaneously is frustrating.  Until, naturally, I tried PUG's pencil skirts.  I started out with the Black Label skirt, then Pinup Couture's, and finally Dixiefried's.  I'm happy to say all of them fit wonderfully, but they are all unique in their fit, pros and cons, etc.  They each have a different feel to them and when I pick one out of my closet for the day, it's not at random.

The Black Label High Waisted Pencil skirt was my first foray into PUG's skirt selection.  The super high waist was what sold me on it (not to mention Masuimi looks incredible in it).  I've always wanted a great fitting high waisted skirt, but never found any high enough, or the ones that should have been high enough were too large in the waist and just stuck up and away from my body.  My measurements looked like they'd match up with the XS, so I went ahead and ordered it with fingers crossed.  Success!  This skirt is great for elongating the waist and giving some extra oomph to the hips.  If you want to show your waist and hips off their their greatest advantage, this is the skirt for you.  The cotton has little give, but is comfortable, and the double kickpleat in the back is a nice touch.  I'm not a huge fan of side zippers, but in this one's defense, it does stay put and gives the skirt a great fit.  If you're planing on sitting down for an extended period of time, it might not be the best option, because it is very fitted so after a while it starts to feel tight if sitting down.  I prefer to wear a contrasting color with this skirt, or if with a black top, to add a different colored belt to give a bit more definition.  I'm small busted so without the belt my pear shape comes out more.  With the belt it keeps the focus away from that and keeps things balanced.

The Pinup Couture pencil skirts tend to win out over Dixiefried and Black Label skirts in the Facebook debates over which skirt is more wearable.  I agree and disagree.  The fit compared to the Black Label skirt is more generous, but still with an emphasis on curves.  It has a wide waistband that the Black Label skirt doesn't have, so instead of a slinky silhouette you have a defined waist separate from the rest of the skirt.  I have the Red Floral and Houndstooth.  The Houndstooth has minimal stretch, and the fabric is stiffer thanks to the way the pattern is printed on (that's right, PRINTED houndstooth... no snagging that always happens with the woven ones!), but it's still super comfortable.  The Red Floral has a bit more stretch, and goes with so many shades of red, pink, orange, and green.  The roses themselves have such a variety of colors in them, which is hard to tell from the website's photos.  For me, the slit is a bit higher than I usually am comfortable with, but the skirt stays in place and doesn't ride up so I rarely remember it.                      Possibly my favorite feature for this skirt... I've never encountered the dreaded VPL.  With any type of undergarment.

Which is amazing.  The XS for both fits perfectly, and they're both a classic staple pencil skirt, one that every woman should have hanging in her closet.

And of course, Dixiefried!  My personal favorite in terms of comfort.  I shied away from them initially because my measurements were below the XS's waist size, but after I heard that they ran small, I decided to go for gold.  Like all things bengaline, this skirt has an unbelievable amount of stretch.  So it's ridiculously comfortable and I could wear it all day.  I love the shorter slit in the back, and the button on top that you can move over a bit if need be (I didn't, since I liked the fit of it the way it was).  The waist does have some give, but not much.  The key to this skirt is wearing proper undergarments.  Pantylines are a strong possibility if you're wearing the wrong kind, so when it's cool enough, I'll wear pantyhose, otherwise I stick to thongs or underwear I know doesn't show underneath.  The material is much clingier than cotton, so if you size down and have some lumps 'n bumps, it can emphasize them since the material likes to hold everything together, including finding its way into dips and pulling that in.  So again, like everything, follow the size chart and you should be fine (or even better, ask on the Facebook page... I've gotten great advice that way)!  I also have it in the discontinued burgundy (shown above to the right), which like most darker fabrics does run smaller.  These skirts were my first Dixiefried purchases, and if you're looking to try out that line, I would highly encourage giving the skirts a chance.

So, my personal prizes for PUG's pencil skirts?
Most comfortable: Dixiefried.  Not to say that the others aren't, but the bengaline stretch of these skirts can't be matched.
Most work-friendly:  It's a toss up between Dixiefried and Pinup Couture.  I find PC to be less sultry, I guess you could say, but the high slit could be an issue for some.  And Dixiefried is just so comfortable.
Least likely to wrinkle: Dixiefried.  Cotton just wrinkles after a while.  'Tis its nature.
Least likely to give VPL: Pinup Couture all the way!
Most dressy: Black Label
Highest waist: Black Label
Most versatile: I'm going with Pinup Couture, simply because it is easy to wear in just about any situation, and the patterns make it so that multiple colored tops can be matched with it.
As I said, each skirt has its own benefits, so it all depends on what you need! Sometimes, a pencil skirt just isn't working for you that day.  That's where Doris and Audrey come in....

The Audrey skirt is the shortest I'll go for a skirt.  Initially hesitant about the length, Kristina's photos on the site won me over.  It's hard to resist.  Flirty and one of the few shorter skirts that I've never worried about flying upwards, the Audrey does indeed invoke Miss Hepburn's style.  I have the black version which was in the run before the current one, which I believe ran smaller than the ones available now.  It is quite fitted in the waist, and I wish I'd have tried on the new floral ones to compare, but in general, the cut is beautiful and adaptable.  I prefer to wear my Doris top, Joanie top, or a striped shirt or turtleneck with this.  It has a side zip and the waist is designed to be worn right below the ribs.  It is also full without needing a crinoline or petticoat, and looks great with thick pantyhose/stockings in the winter.

The Doris skirt is one of my top go-to garments in my closet.  I snatched up a discontinued peacock printed one first, and while it seems like such a simple skirt, there's something perfect about the fit of this.  I can't quite place my finger on it, but the way it highlights the waist and then flows out full looks so lovely and you have to twirl around when you put it on.  I brought it back east this April thinking that I could wear it with some stockings to keep warm, but it turned out to be in the 90's in New England.  No problem, just leave the stockings off and it's breezy and cool.  AND it doesn't blow up and expose everything like some swing skirts.  This crazy photo was taken at the beach on an extremely windy day when I could barely see because my eyes wouldn't stop watering from the wind and I was trying to figure out why this dog off in the distance looked so odd and it turned out to be a woman in a floral swimsuit bending over.  Hence my expression.  It was THAT windy, and I'm happy to say that even while climbing on rocks I didn't flash anybody.  So yes, this skirt is amazing even if it's a terrible photo of the actual skirt, but hey, how else can I prove that this skirt is beach-wind safe?  My boyfriend got me the Pink Atomic Doris skirt as an early birthday gift at the Boutique's grand opening (I'm hoping next year for an iron to iron it with that doesn't shoot scalding hot water everywhere), and the print is out of this world.  Bad joke?  Sure, but it's a great skirt.  I even modeled the walls in my bathroom on the design.  And it goes with so many colors that I can't ever tire of wearing it.  It runs a bit larger than the Peacock, but again, that is a darker print so it's to be expected.  If the price makes you nervous, don't be!  You'll wear it so much that it will be worth every penny.
So that's it for my PUG skirt obsession!  All great, all different, all you have to do is see which is the one for you :)

I own a few Doris skirts, but I've been so unsure as to which pencil skirt I wanted. You've successfully answered all of my questions in regards to pencil skirts...and you may have sold me on the Audrey as well. You look dynamite in all of them, thanks for sharing! <3
