We've decided to skip the large party we usually have for Halloween and instead do a smaller formal dinner party for about 8-12 friends. I've asked them to come to dinner as someone famous, infamous or historical who no longer walks this earth. So far Cleopatra, Frida Kahlo, Jesus and Anna Nicole Smith are coming - should be good conversation.
I'm trying to come up with a menu though. I want something that doesn't require me to be killing myself in the kitchen all day, yet something impressive to my friends. Now I'm not Martha Stewart so I don't feel comfortable taking on some recipes. I'd like to do a salad course, soup course, main course and dessert and we'll have a few appetizers, beer and wine. The recipes don't HAVE to be fall themed but it would be a nice touch.
Any recipe ideas guys?

For the salad I'd stick with whatever blend you prefer, I usually go with spring mix. To make it seem more fall appropriate try adding dried cranberries and toasted slivered almonds.
For the soup, pumpkin and butternut squash both tend to go over well. If you'd like to mix things up you could try a curried butternut squash soup.
For the main course, I'd suggest a root vegetable ragout served over soft polenta. That way you're covered as far as most dietary restrictions go. Make sure to check with your guests about those ASAP.
For dessert I'd go with an apple tart. Slightly more upscale than a traditional apple pie, but it still embodies the same warmth.
In addition to beer and wine, you could serve hot cider. (it works well spiked with spiced rum)
Hope this helps!
