Hey ladies -

What are your go to rituals for falling and staying asleep? I have been having the hardest time staying asleep when I finally do fall asleep, which is causing me to be tired during the day, and depleting my energy so that I can make it through work, but not to the gym (which is really depressing me - I started there to get healthy, but I haven't been able to keep up because I'm so damn tired!). I've done my annual physical and blood work-up, so we know it's not due to a medical issue... So I would appreciate your input on how you do it.

As always, thank you!

Hi Jennifer,

You could try Valerian Hops half an hour before bed time. It smells like socks, but has helped me in the past. Good luck with it! :)

Try a nice hot bath.. turn on some music and pamper yourself. I find when I can't sleep its cause something has me bothered emotionally .. You can get a fab essential oil called Mellow Mix by Cascia (?) and then throw some chamomille tea bags into your bath. Total chill  out. If its the weekend I'll enjoy a glass of red wine and really stop and conciously make myself relax..because Im an artist I tend to be very high strung or melancholy..you know the whole artist thing. So as I've aged I've learned to listen to myself more, and  take care of me just like I do everyone else I love. It's helped alot.  Also turn off the tv if its on, and rest!

Hope this helps!

I started taking Vitamin D after reading that it helped someone else with their sleeplessness.  Helped me a ton!

Trust me, I have tried IT ALL. I used to be very sick, along with the sickness came major insomnia and night sweats. I was only able to sleep about 3 hours a night for weeks.. It is such an awful feeling to be incredibly tired but unble to sleep. Now that my health is being taken care of I don't have a serious problem anymore, but I've always had problems falling and staying asleep so I'll tell you what has worked best for me.

Melatonin supplement. It's cheap, you can get it from walmart or where ever you get your groceries, and it HELPS! Read up on it online and you'll see how good it is. I take 4mg a night, but you can take anywhere from 1mg to 5mg. This stuff is great and it makes a huge difference. Safe, healthy, safe for kids, great stuff.

2nd would be a Calcium and D supplement. It makes a little difference, but helps me relax. I take it 30 mins before bedtime with my Melatonin.

This may seem obvious but stay away from any caffeine at least 6 hours before bedtime. It's easy for some to accidentally sneak in, but it makes a difference.

Keep the room cool. This is something you may not realize, but having the room slightly cooler than comfortable is more relaxing. Your body uses energy to heat itself up, making you sleepy sooner.

Please try to stay away from medication. Nyquil to prescription, it helps at first but hurts in the long run. Take the healthy route in the first place and you'll be happy in the long run. *Hugs* oh and sweet dreams! ;
