Hi Ladies,

I have had the worst problem putting my hair up ever, I have waist length hair (I'm 5' 8" so that's pretty long) and most of the pinup hairstyles I get are too bulky with my hair. Do you have any ideas for good styles for really long hair?

thanks!

Here is a photo of my hair so you can see that there really is a lot of it to consider

so.... ahem... help!

thanks! :)

Scarf rolls could be your friend, depending on the thickness. A simple Rosie the Riveter do could look good, as well. Oooh! Mermaid waves!!! Always lovely, especially with a flower or hair bow. You could fluff up the front, pin it, and leave the back down. A snood might work, again, depending on thickness.

hmm, do you think just some standard curls right on the front, a hair scarf and then leaving it long in the back would work?

my hair is really thin by the way so unless I don't wash it for a few days it's hard to get it to stay in anything without a massive amount of hairspray or gel :) (even with braids)

thank you so much for the tips

I have thin, hard to style hair, myself. Left to its own devices, my hair would be limp, straight, and boring. Don't underestimate the value of teasing, hair rats, and throwing a lot of hairspray in there.

I'd say that wand curling and using lots of lovely accessories would work. I love this site for accessories: http://vintagebox1947.com

They have fascinators, hats, and lovely birdcage veils that you can just pin in. For a simple style, I'll lightly curl the back, pin the front a little, and throw on a veil.

I think this sort of look would be doable: http://aolanswers.com/questions/awedding_vintage_hair_style_5041343...

Or this: http://helen-highwater.blogspot.com/2010/01/scarf-roll-hair-do.html

Or an easy updo: http://fabulousfemalesnetwork.wordpress.com/2012/04/01/mad-men-hair...

It's really just about being creative and having fun with it. So many women do nothing with their hair that just doing a little something is impressive.

oh I love the first two! definitely going to try them out ;)

You're very right about teasing! it helps :)

I think I'm going to have trouble pulling off fascinators during the day though! Mostly right now I'm doing a bun or in a pony tail with bangs, but you've definitely got a lot of great ideas that I really want to try!

My hair is currently about two feet long and the thickest hair you have ever seen. I feel your pain. But we have lots of options that people with short hair don't.

One style that was mentioned below is one of my favorites, mermaid waves. You can give yourself a gorgeous art nouveau hair, which isn't quite pinup, but personally I like playing with the different styles ranging from the 20's to the 60's. You can use a deep triple or double barrel iron to achieve these waves with some hair spray. Then fluff them out a bit, brush them if they are crunchy with soft brush (but not too much) and style as you wish.

My hair in my profile picture is really two feet long. I pin-curled part of my hair and set the rest in small sponge rollers. I used a setting cream and let them set for a night. (my set takes much longer to dry since I have such thick hair) I then brushed them out slightly to make them fuller and not so Shirley Temple. I took long bobby pins and gave myself small victory rolls. If your hair gets a little frizzy I would put a bit of hair oil or smoother and lightly sculpt your curls. This look is definitely more of a 40's pinup look.

And for a slightly later pinup look I would do big barrel waves like Jessica Rabbit. It looks awesome one thinner hair too if you flip your hair up when you finish curling all of your hair at a diagonal inward with some hair spray. You get big sexy hair that most people with short hair would kill for.

Hope that helps!

oh, you're hair is almost as long as mine! and your curls look gorgeous. Now to reveal myself as being completely un-familiar with the world of actually doing something with my hair (sorry) I don't actually have a curling iron, or a hair dryer. But if I were to invest in one, a multi-style is the best option? I can check the size of the barrels in it. Or am I better off buying individual styles and having a more solid device?

Sorry the delayed response!

You can honestly curl your hair in too many ways. An easy way to curl your hair with no hot tools is pin curling. You can either do a wet set, which is taking your damp hair in small one inch sections, rolling them up in to a curl, and pinning it flat to your head. You can also have them facing out instead of flat if you want a little more lift off of your scalp. Usually leaving it over night (8 hours or so) and let them out in the morning. My hair is too thick for just a plain wet set. I run a little curling lotion or hair spray (depending on the weather) and roll them up that way. But don't saturate your hair, just a slight dampness usually does it.

Everyone's hair is a little different and weather can do a big number on the stay of your curl. So you might have to play around with a few types of products and amounts of them to get the best curl for you. The smaller section of hair, the tighter and more springy type of curl you will get and larger, well just larger.

I have a one inch curling iron that serves me well. It's ceramic and cost about 20 bucks. It's no special brand or anything. To get the best stay out of a heated curl is to curl the a section of hair with a bit of hair spray on it, roll it back up once you let it go, then pin it to your head. If you do this will all of you hair and let it cool, you will have a curl that lasts much longer. This is much easier then using hot rollers considering how much hair you have.

Using these few things you can get all sorts of different curls based on which direction you curl, the size, and how much you brush them out. Oh also, I use Ion hair spray. It doesn't dry my hair out, and when I lightly brush a curl out once I put the hair spray on it gives me a very fluffy effect. It's soft and holds the style. Let me know if you have anymore questions! :)

Thanks for the info. I have very long thick hair also. Iwas on the verge of chopping it off but now I'm going to try this when I have time.  I am also a NOLA girl

I have pretty long hair too, on lazy days I just put up my hair in a high ponytail and do a bumper bang and I will curl the ends of the ponytail, sometimes I will accessorize with a flower or a bandana
