I have such a difficult time styling my hair because a) it's really fine, and b) it's thin on the sides.  So, in order to get a style that even remotely resembles victory rolls, I have to back comb the crap out it and I'd really rather not damage my hair.   Also, it doesn't hold curl for more than an hour.  Does anyone else have this hair type?  How have you made these styles work with it?

I have the same hair type as you so I will be following this thread!

My hair is both thin and fine so here are a few of my tricks:

- Hair rats: These are a life saver!  Make a few in different sizes to use as a base or filler for rolls and twists.  My basic how to: Collect your own shed hair or buy some that matches your current hair color (I like the super cheap crimpy kind because it rats easily and I'm kind of grossed out by keeping my own), buy a few hairnets that match your hair color in different sizes (I like the super fine hair nets.  Some tutorials you'll see will use heavier netting like a snood), take some of your collected hair, rat it up and wrap the hair net around it.  Based on the size of the hairnet /quantity of hair you can create small or large rats.  When you're making rolls, fake bangs, bouffants you can pin the rat at the base or roll inside instead of (or in addition to) ratting your hair.

- Volume powder: There are a lot of different brands but I use Got 2b Powder'ful Volumizing Styling Powder.  It works so much better for me than wet products.

- Wet Set w/ Setting Lotion: Heat set curls just fall out of my hair so I have to do a wet set if I want curl.  Setting lotion with my wet set seems to help a lot.  You can get it at Sally Beauty Supply.  A bonnet hair dryer is your friend!

Thanks for the advice!

I agree with Meli! All of the advice she gave is on the dot!! Teasing really helps. So be prepare to invest in a good teasing brush.....
