Overnight wet set for finger waves- good idea for a group performance?

Hi ladies!

I am about to style 5 different womens' heads of hair for a 1930's burlesque show, in about a week.  I have asked all of them to show up to the rehearsal the night before the show, with wet heads of hair - so I can set the front of their heads for an overnight finger wave setting. We are on a limited time budget for hair during the actual two shows, which is why I am setting their heads ahead of time...

3 of the 5 women have extremely thick and long hair - and I thought that it would be optimal to set their hair while wet. (One girl's hair is literally down to her small of her back, and super curly). I am planning on using a massive amount of gel, and setting their waves with long bobby pins.

Has anyone ever done this with their own hair? (An overnight setting?) Does anyone have any advice, or better suggestions?

Thank you ladies!

Hey Bonnie!

Wet set definitely sounds like the way to go.  You might try using setting lotion instead of gel : http://www.sallybeauty.com/Proclaim-Setting-Lotion/SBS-631060,defau... .  I find that gel results in super crunchy funkyness when I try to use it for fingerwaves and no real staying power but I don't have really thick hair.  Setting lotion can also be tailored to the hair type based on how much you dilute it with water.  Lotta Body is another brand I've tried and like.

Duckbill clips are also awesome for doing fingerwaves: http://www.sallybeauty.com/duckbill-clips/SBS-292500,default,pd.htm... .  They're a lot easier to get in and out than bobby pins and stay pretty well.  Wave clamps also work if you're going for a more 3D wave than a flat wave against the head.

Hope that helps!  Sounds like it will be an awesome show :D

You're very welcome!  I haven't had any problems sleeping in them but they are a bit bulkier than bobby pins.  There are a couple of different types with grips or teeth that can stick a little more than the smooth clips, if you have slippery hair.  If you were going to do a full head fingerwave, they might be a bit awkward.

I'd definitely wrap their hair in a net like you mentioned and maybe even a scarf too.  I keep a couple big silk scarves for wrapping my hair after I've done pincurls or waves because it helps keep the frizz factor down and keep the curls/waves a little more protected from late night flip flopping ;)

There are some pincurl patterns you can use, with a good brush out, to mimic waves.  That's how I usually create Bettie Page style waves.  You just alternate the direction of the pin curl rows (first row down, second row up, third row down, etc). You get a little more of a dimensional wave but that might be an alternative to a true fingerwave depending on how the rest of the hair is going to be styled and the amount of time you have to finish the style.
