After seeing some of you mention the Sculpture Pin Curler here, I decided to try it out, and finally had some time last night.

I have only tried pin curls once before, for a wedding this summer. I made the rookie mistake of putting saltwater spray in it because I was worried about the staying power of the curls (my hair is a little difficult) in the hot summer weather. Needless to say, although it turned out quite nice and the curls lasted all night, brushing out was not an option (and I don't even want to think about the next morning - straight into the shower!). So, this was the first time for trying to do that.

It was fairly easy to use, although I had some trouble with my hair sliding off, while trying to avoid weird ends. Although I'm new to this, so what do I really know, I agree with Ali W. that it doesn't really shorten the time. I actually think it took me a little longer, as it was only possible to take a certain amount of hair for each curl (that's how it seemed to me to get it to work), so I had to make lots of them. But, the advantage is of course that you then get even curls. I also think it made it a lot easier on my arms, although it took a long time to finish.

What I didn't think about doing this on a weekday, was that it would require some time in the morning too. Another rookie mistake. Maybe I should have brushed more, but at some point I had to leave for work. I did find that I had some bad tangles, I think Lila Starlet mentioned that too in a comment. In general I felt a little sorry for my hair while brushing, I don't know if that's common when brushing out pin curls?

I think it turned out OK for a first time. Of course, when I went outside it was super windy and raining! :( I was really frustrated, but thankfully, pin curls a quite resilient. Apart from that, the day turned out great. Wearing my black and white pin dot Heidi as well, I got compliments all day for the whole package; My coworkers, the lady in the cafeteria and others that I don't work with. I went out swing dancing after work, and an older lady came up to me and told me how wonderful it is to see someone looking like that. (She also wanted to know where I got the dress for her daughter, so I told her where to shop :) ).

This looks absolutely fantastic! It gives a really great wave to your hair. Now I'm going to buy one. :)

Thank you!

That turned out absolutely stunning for a first time!  I now have to order one!

Thank you!

Did you roll all your curls as under curls? Also were they flat to your head or raised pincurls. Either way it turned out great and you got great volume!

Thanks! Yes, under curls, and they were pinned flat. I have to experiment with the direction etc.

Thank you!

Hey - does anyone know where I can buy one of these little gadgets in the UK? (or anywhere online for that matter) Even ebay draws a blank :( I totally emphathise with the 'tired arms' comment - even with shorter that shoulder-length hair, it feels like I've had a workout after pin curling the old fashioned way!

Thanks - although I've just done the math and works out over £30 :O (I am sure a factory in China is just gonna jump on this soon and start churning them out for a dollar!) Unfortunately other priorities mean I can't justify the expense right now, although I did hear from somewhere that using an old dolly peg can be used- by sectioning the hair, placing in the middle and twisting up. The only thing missing would be the comb, although with fairly fine, straight hair, I'm thinking this may not be essential. I'll guess I'll wait and see!!

It's a little cheaper if you just buy the refill. It's one without the box and you get the booklet as a pdf. I did that.
