Hello ladies!

I have a large Bettie Page jumper, the circle skirt version, in green.

It's much too big now, I need to take it in about 4inches but have NO idea how I would go about that myself, or where to go for a professional as I don't want to walk into just any shop (I live in the Kansas City area if you have any suggestions).

I also have a Micheline dress I need taken in if I can't trade it for a M...

tips from skilled and experienced seamtresses would be most appreciated!!

Hi Shannon! And congrats on needing a 4" alteration!

I haven't seen that skirt in person, but from the photos it looks like it's princess seams from the top of the skirt down? In which case all you need to do is take in each of those seams a bit, spreading the amount you need to take in across all the seams. I'm assuming you have a machine and can sew a bit? it would be pretty easy to do.

I'm not sure how many seams and darts there are total, but just divide 4" by the total number of seams you have to take in -- don't include the zipper, just leave that seam alone! Then fold the skirt inside out on each seam, mark a point at the waistline that is 1/2 the amount you need to take away from that seam, and then sew a new seam starting at the top, tapering to your mark, and then tapering back to the original seam a few inches down. So if you had 4 seams you could take in, you'd need to take in 1" on each, so make your mark 1/2" in (so when you unfold it you've taken a total of 1")

Don't do any trimming to the new seams until you are sure it fits!

I would recommend that you take the facing off, do the same alterations to it and then reattach it -- but not knowing the construction details I'm kind of guessing there.

If you can sew, you can do this yourself, I think. Good luck!
