For a girl with my body shape (on the bigger side, large boobs, small waist, long torso, wide back) ordering online is a NIGHTMARE! Just cause the "measurements" of online stores match, doesn't mean it will look good on me. And it's because of this I prefer to buy my clothes from a store where I can try things on.
WHich would be fine if I still lived in LA, but now that I live in Austin everything is "actual" vintage, which means little stretch, little sizes, and in general a LOT of sad faces. So if anyone knows of a place that carries Pinup GIrl Clothing or other similar company brands? There is a costume shop that rents out "stop staring" and PUG clothing, but it's rentals and I would love to own some super keen dresses.
If anyone has advice or knows of some Austin and/or San Antonio area stores I would LOVE to hear them. Every time I ask folk I know they refer me to the afore mentioned costume shop or ask "but why wouldn't you want to go buy real vintage" to which I have to explain that a sie 8 dress that fits like a 6 and costs over 300$ is so not what I want fot my size 10/12 body and small wallet.
at a size 10/12 you'll have a lot of options versus someone who is a size 18/20 or larger.
I'm sorry if I'm not understanding, but why aren't you just buying from PUG directly? the US has free shipping, and a really easy return process for those items not on sale (sale items just can't be returned period, i find selling on ebay works well though)
from googling 'rockabilly austin' a store called bombs away came up- you might try there, as well as a store called Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds.
another option is once you've got your measurements is to find a local seamstress to remake clothing from vintage patterns, or look to etsy for custom made clothing.
with all of Austin's love for Vintage- have you tried a vintage size 14? that usually can be the same as a modern 10.
because she wants to try it on before she buys. just because the measurements match up does not mean it will look good on her, and she wants to try on so she doesn't have to hassle with returns
Megan, is the costume shop you're talking about Lucy in Disguise? Not sure if they do this for all their items but I *think* you can buy anything they have. I bought a petticoat from there that they had available for rent or purchase. Not sure about other items but it might be worth checking out. I understand your frustration - I hate ordering online too!
Off the top of my head, you might try these two shops:
Murpho's Rod & Custom : 1700 Fortview Rd, Austin, TX 78704. They have a sweet little boutique in the shop and often carry really cute vintage-y clothes. I don't think they carry PUG but they might have something you're looking for.
Sekret Oktober (2101 South 1st Street Austin, TX 78704) is a little more punk/goth but they will occasionally carry some modern vintage inspired pieces.
another place to buy the kind of clothes you like is at the Lone Star RoundUp (or LSRU), which happens once a year in April. The one this year (2015), is 4/17 & 4/18. Many vendors sell Pinup style clothes there. It's a car show, so you have to pay to get in, I think $15. It's also a place to wear your pinup clothes to. Also, the Bazaar on Riverside sells Hell Bunny brand, and retro bathing suits. It is not exclusively a pinup store but the carry some pinup style clothes there, They also have a location in Wimberley.
