Hi everyone!  I'm going to my first Viva Las Vegas this year!  I'm super excited.  I can't wait to shop and drool over everyone's clothes.  I was wondering if any of you have been to VLV?  Any advice for a first timer?  What to wear (I plan on changing a couple times a day haha)?  What to do?  I still have to come up with some outfits for hubby.  So far he has 2 vintage shirts and a fedora.  ;-)  I already decided I may have to fly Southwest - they let you check 3 bags for free and I may need one just for crinolines.  Hehe.

This will be my first time too! I am tying it in with getting married as I'm coming all the way from australia. Thanks for all the great advice everyone.

Congrats Alyssa! You getting married in Vegas?

yep! Tossing up between the Wynn & Mandalay Bay valley of the falls. I'm trying to get it done on the 28th as looking at last years program its just bands playing and then we can really get into Viva the rest of the weekend!

Good idea, Alyssa. What date do you arrive in Las Vegas? Have you looked into all the legalities of it? I remember doing some research for a friend in 2007 and you had to go to the City Hall and lodge the application 48 hours before the ceremony. Something about blood tests, but don't think applies to visitors. Also, when you get back to Melbourne you have to do a change of name at Births Deaths and Marriages. Your name doesn't change automatically to your married name when you marry overseas, apparently. You can also print the marriage forms from the internet first.

Good luck!!!!

Thanks, I have looked into in a little bit. Apparently Vegas is the only place outside of australia that our Gov will recognise a marriage. Most venues seem to include a trip to city hall to get the paperwork. But my step brother got married there a few years back so my sister in law has been helpful.

We were thinking of arriving the weekend before, that way we can do hens/ bucks & then do some sightseeing before Viva! After that we were thinking (well, I was - he doesn't know yet!) that we fly back to LA & do a bit of a road trip up the coast for a few days before coming home.

Oooh nice! I've done Highway 1 from LA to San Fransisco. Really lovely drive. I'm off to the States next Thursday and planning a roadtrip also. We've got 3 weeks on the road but this will be my fourth time and fourth roadtrip. We bought a van from a friend over there so can use it each year we go over. We can sleep in it also so will save on hire fees as well as accommodation.

Here's a tip: Dollar Rentals are the cheapest usually. I've been through them about 3 times. Never had a hassle. And if I've wanted a rental for 2 weeks I've crunched them down on price also. Doesn't hurt to ask!

How's the cigarette smoke at Viva?  I have asthma, and the smoke in Vegas is the reason I've never gone to Viva.  I've been dying to go for years now, but I don't want to get there, get a lungful of smoke, then spend the rest of the time in my room coughing and tweaking from my Albuterol inhaler.

I dont even remember having people smoke near me. Im from NYC where everyone is required to smoke outside, so i tend to notice when people smoke near me indoors. I dont remember that ever being an issue.

Thanks for the response, Billie May.  I'm going to look into going now. :)

Cigarette smoke is prevalent in the casino and in the all bars downstairs. I didn't notice any smoking allowed upstairs where the vendors were though. Perhaps to protect the wares for sale.

Thanks Erica!  Looks like the Orleans is already all booked up.  Where is everyone else staying?

Yea, The Orleans got booked up about two months after the last Viva. Just place yourself on the waitlist and alot of rooms do open up at last minute. Gold Coast has a shuttle service that will take you back & forth from the hotel to Gold Coast. I had some friends stay at Caesar's, Venetian, and the Palms. They have cancellation policies of 72 hrs beforehand will get you a refund of your 1st night deposit.
