I have naturally curly hair, shoulder length and am *dying* to do vintage styling on it.  My dream hair would look like Rita Hayworth's.  I cringe when I watch tutorials on styling hair because there is so much brushing, combing and handling involved.  With my kind of hair, one swipe of a brush makes it flat and frizzy.  When I try to style it, it just looks like a damaged mess.  I would LOVE any sort of assistance or guidance.  Are there any other curly topped gals out there who have overcome this issue?  Thank you!!!

I don't really have any advice, but I can certainly relate. My hair is very long, very thick, and very curly, and I can't do anything with this hot mess until I flat iron it -- which takes hours. If I don't flat iron, I will usually just pin or roll up the sides with bobby pins so I have something going on, and I wear short Bettie-style bangs.

Thank you, Angela.  Keeping it simple seems like the best thing, until I can figure out something else.  With a 6 year old boy running around, I can't imagine being able to flat iron it out!  I really appreciate your response!  Happy Friday!

I do not have your hair type but I have gathered that you have to work through the "poodle poof" that one gets from pin curls and just brush and brush until it ends up getting smooth.  But I am not sure if this would work on your hair type if you did a foam rag roller or something?  Have you checked for youtube videos for your hair type?  Not sure if they specifically know how to get that style but they may provide info that can help you get there.

Thanks for the info, Fallon.  I have only recently learned about foam rag rollers and am looking around my area for them.  I'll keep trying to find just the right tutorial.  When I try most of the techniques I've gathered from youtube I just end up flat and frizzy.  Not a glamorous look at all!  I'll just keep trying.  Thanks again and have a great weekend!

If you want a super quick fix (say you're in a rush to go out) you could use a snood for a vintage look without much fuss

Thanks, Fernanda!  I forgot that I have a snood!  I'll have to figure out where it went and start styling!  Thank you so much!

Dorothy, I have EXACTLY the same problem. A little longer than yours but a curly mess all the same, lol. I am hopeless with hair, and I mean HOPELESS.
I like to keep it simple and I just discovered a quick and very easy style....kitten ears! (so cute and so easy!)
I figured the best way to start doing hair is to start simple, then go from there.

Here's a tutorial:

I'm so thankful you sent me this suggestion, Bianca!  That actually looks like something I can manage.  Thank you so much and keep me posted if you find some more great solutions to our curly messes!  :)  Have a great week!

You should use Lotta Body on your hair before you style it. It is a setting lotion that reduces frizz.  You dilute it with water and then spray it on wet hair.  It's best to use for wet setting like pin curls or finger waves.  You can find it at beauty supply stores.

Here is an example of brushed out pin curls that I did on myself today.  Be prepared to brush a lot.  Don't give up if it's a giant frizz ball.  Just keep brushing using a bristle brush and brush against your hand.  You can also use duck bill clips to tame it and force it into submission.

Thank you for the product suggestion, Ali.  I was thinking I should add a product to what I'm trying to do, but didn't know where to start!  Anything to keep that frizz away.  By the way, you *and* your hair look simply gorgeous!  I hope I can get my hair to look so good!

Have you considered "relaxing" your hair??

If you lighten/bleach your hair it probably wouldn't be a great idea but for more ease of styling it's something you might want to consider! I performed this service on a client recently and her extra tight curls were a much looser manageable wave.
