I seem to be clueless when it comes to applying eyeshadow, liner, etc.I'm 48, so I feel I have to watch it, or I'll end up looking like I'm trying too hard,

I love the smoky eye look.(however, when I attempt it, my eyeliner ends up smudged in all the wrong ways after about an hour, I try using eyeshadow end up looking Goth, which is fine, but not the look I'm trying for.

I use pencil liner because it's easier to apply, If anyone has any tips, pointers, brands, etc.

thank you Morgan! i'm 35 and i worry that my experiments with eye make-up make me look like i'm trying to hard to fit in with the youngins! (which is not the case; apparently, they don't do colors on their eyes! lol!) so whatever tips this brings, i'm with you and am willing to try too! i like to play with color, so please include color tips (today, i went with a pretty spring-y green across the lids with no liner and with lots of mascara. i thought it looked ok! :) ). oh, and you don't look your age in your pic!!

I would suggest watching tutorials on You Tube.  I love Kandee Johnson's tutorials.  I've learned alot from her.  :-)

Amber, thank you, good idea re the You Tube tutorial,, I'll check it out.

Jennifer. thanks for the compliment, (And I suppose I should also thank my maternal side for the good genes. :) )   I bought some liquid liner today, so I'm going to play with that..if it works, I'll try to post a picture

Kandee Johnson is amazing, she does really good work and her tutorials are very well put together

If you're worried about smudging, I suggest using an eyeshadow primer. Urban Decay's primer is very popular and works (You can find it on Sephora's site).

Also, the right brushes help immensely. I never use the plastic crappy applicators that come with eyeshadow sets. Again, Sephora has a lot of different brushes.

I personally am not skilled enough to get pencil liner thin enough, so I tend towards liquid liners. I use Maybelline's Lash Stiletto liner in black. It's easy to apply and I can usually get a pretty thin line that stays put all day (if I'm seriously concentrating on it lol).

From your picture, I think you'd look totally great with a very subtle cat eye. I usually use liquid liner up top for that, and then only a teensy bit of pencil liner in brown on the bottom. My eyes are kind of small, so I like to open them up that way.

you can always try doing a brown or grey smokey eye, instead of black so that you don't end up with that lovely racoon eye look that happens so easily :) it looks like you have brown eyes, so try purples and greys, navy blue would be really pretty too.  definitely look up some youtube tutorial, maybe some that the girl is older than 16 since they are going to be going for a different look than you are.  i thought this was a good video http://http://youtube/3-QV8d8Rx0M, it is at least a good place to start, she is doing a green eye look, but also goes into priming the skin and foundation and stuff.  I hope that helps you, good luck and have fun playing with makeup :)

the stupid link doesn't want to work, but if you copy/paste it into the google search bar or the address bar it will come up

I don't have any wisdom as far as style...I've worn cat-eye since high school (which was a long time ago!), but as for liner, I love MAC's fluidline.  It comes in a little glass pot, goes on flawlessly, and stays put.  I have used so many different pencils over the years, but once I found fluidline, I haven't looked back.  I have oily skin, so pencils would tend to smear and feather over time.

I have a drag queen friend who swears by Palladio in the little bottle with an applicator.  I tried it a few years ago, and it applied well, but it burned my eyes like crazy.  I might have to give it another try in case they changed the formula.
