Lets talk makeup: what are your makeup essentials for putting together your vintage look?

So ladies, I am looking to buy some new makeup (quality makeup in particular!) and would love to hear what makeup essentials you can't go without to complete your vintage look.

What makeup do you use in your everyday beauty routine? And your evening/night out make up?

What are some brands that you swear by?

Has anyone tried the following brands: Besame Cosmetics, Lime Crime, MAC, Chanel, Dior?

Currently my range of cosmetics is pretty sucky and hence I look pretty blah! At the moment I use Maybeline liquid foundation, Natio loose powder, Elizabeth Arden eyebrow pencil, Natio eye shaddow and brow shaddow, Natio Bronzer,  Napoleon Perdis lipstick in Aphrodite, and some lame drug store lip liner. Pretty lame, I know!

I'm looking to broaden my horizons with some better quality makeup and would love to hear what other vintage girls swear by :D

Mostly MAC:

Face: Studio Fix foundation, Mineralize skinfinish natural

- I might switch to a different powder next time, but it's ok.
I also sometimes use Face and Body foundation

Eyes: Painterly as a base, Vanilla and Wedge eyeshadow, Technakohl liner in graphblack, one of their matte eyeshadows for the eyebrows. Mascara: Sumptuous Extreme from Estee Lauder.

- I am one of those with serious problems when it comes to eyeliner and it ending up elsewhere. This is the best I have tried so far. I have never found a great mascara, but this is by far the best I have tried.

Lips: Russian red + Brick lip pencil

- I first line the lips, then fill in with the same liner, put lipstick on with a brush, and then I go over with the liner on the outer edge. Stays perfect all day. I sometimes wear Capricious, it's not a red, and chosen mainly because I felt red would be too dramatic for work. I have however recently started wearing the Russian also to work, and I might stick to it. :)

I am completely addicted to Besame Cosmetics.  Their reds are probably my most favourite (MAC Russian Red as well).  I started on their lippie sampler set.

Face: Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream, Tarte Smooth Operator powder, The Balm Mary Lou-manizer, blush varies - Tarte Dollface, NARS Orgasm

Eyes: Mary Kay Love Lashes primer and waterproof mascara (stuff doesn't budge, even in 100+ temps in a car with no a/c), black gel liner, MAC Brulee shadow or something from the Too Faced sets

Brows: Maybelline Define a brow and Lorac Take a Brow

Lips: Varies, but I always use a clear waterproof liner, makes a big difference. I like the one from Make Up For Ever.

Here are my beauty box "Cant live without products".

I dont wear foundation as my skin is very clear I just wear the make up straight after priming (I use Napoleon Perdis Primer - its to DIE for). I usually (for everyday wear) just wear Russian Red lipstick (or temptation)  and ISL Shocking mascara but when I do my "face" I have other things that I need. Anyway here they are - hope it helps

Lipsticks

MAC = Russian Red Lipstick, and Sheen Supreme in temptation (these are reds)

Clinique = woppin' watermelon in a chubby stick (easy to carry easy to apply) this is an everyday natural color for me

Mascara

The Cheap: Maybelline: Great Lash, lots of Lashes and Benefit They're Real!

Not So Cheap:  Ivys Saint Laurent (Shocking)

Eyeliner:

Benefit: Magic Ink in Jet black

Stila all day stay in black

Blush

Napoleon Perdis - the ultimate contour Palette (has instructions and three seperate shades for contour, color and highlight

Benefit in Dallas

Chanel in Enchantersse

Highlighters and shimmers

MAC - Mineralize skin finish in Light Year (I actually use the gold part as eye shadow and the rest as blush)

Chanel - Gold Fever

Eye Shadow

Nars: China Blue

YSL: Ombres Vibration Duo (green & Purple) (I have brown eyes and these are heavenly and accentuate them)

Benefit: Big Beautiful eyes (for the day time, lovely muted tones, it also gives you instructions)

Bare Minerals: Rock star collection (has everything you need for smokey eyes, glam rock eyes etc AND comes with instructions and brushes)

Glitter: I love a bit of glitter in the night :)

Napoleon - loose dust in 39

Scott Barnes Eye Ice in Glitterachi (I even use this in my hair to make it shiny not overboard tho)

Brushes

MAC 227

Bareminerals - rock 'n' roll

Benefit: Fantail brush

Eye Make-Up Remover

Napoleon Perdis  marshmallow Eye make up remover (one wipe and its GONSKI! Works on other make up as well not only eyes)

I'm a little late on this, but I use Urban Decay makeup. They have such a broad range of colors and products, that there is always something for every makeup junkie. Urban Decay just reformulated their eyeshadows within the last year, and they have made it so that you can pop their individual eyeshadows out of their packaging and stick them into an eyeshadow pan to create your own customized palette. I have several of their eyeshadows and I am never disappointed with the way my makeup turns out. I also love their 24/7 Glide-On Eyeliner Pencils. These were also just revamped, but this occurred within the last two or three months. Previously they had about 10 or 15 different colors of eyeliners in this particular product. After they revamped them, they now have 40 different shades, so again there is something for every makeup junkie. The Eyeshadow Priming Potion is absolutely amazing, and I use it everyday even when I don't do my entire face. Their primer comes in four colors: Original (dries invisible), Sin (pink champagne shimmer), Eden (nude matte), and Greed (gold shimmer). There are very few products that I use on my face that aren't Urban Decay products simply because their products don't irritate my skin like most other companies products.

Since I picked up the Bomber Betty Pin-Up Palette I admittedly have hardly touched the rest of my eyeshadows, blush etc.  It is the perfect little package, tosses into my luggage or purse, and has a good selection of colors for changing things up day to day. (and the packaging is cute - got to admit that is what got me in the first place!)

This is how I feel about makeup; walk into a quality store (Sephora or MAC) and browse around quietly by yourself. Make note of things and colours that get you excited. Then, ask a MUA for recommendation sin affordable products for specific uses- primer, powder, eyebrow filling etc.
most of the time you'll get lots of help in budget friendly ways if you ask the right questions.
Personally, I love my eyebrow kit and several other products by Benefit. My other daily users are from MAC. My day to night are the exact same look so my products stay the same all the time (it's quite handy to have a signature look ;)
At the very least remember, makeup has no guidelines or limits. Your face is a canvas for art!

This thread is a goldmine of information. While I started wearing makeup when I was quite young and am good at applying it, I'm the sort who finds one thing and sticks with it until it's discontinued. I'd love to branch out and try different products, though, and will definitely be picking up a few of the things suggested here.

My current list of beauty products:

Blemish concealer: Rimmel London cover stick in ivory

Face powder: Pur 4-in-1 pressed mineral makeup (I love this stuff! It's light, doesn't clog my pores and evens out my skin tone beautifully.)

Blush: MAC Harmony

Liquid eyeliner: 17 high drama intense liquid eyeliner in blackest black

Mascara: I layer Covergirl Lash Perfection in brown and Maybelline Colossal Volume in classic black

Lipstick: MAC Ruby Woo is my trademark red lipstick. I wear MAC Boyfriend Stealer when I fancy a more Clara Bow look.

It is SUPER important to invest in good foundation & moisturizer & go through a good skin care routine to protect your face, especially if you're going to wear full face makeup every day.  I also think a good set of brushes is valuable.

It is less important to invest a ton for high quality products for other types of products as long as you find things that work for you.

It is also important to make sure you keep your makeup clean, don't share it if possible (although you can search to find information about how to share makeup successfully), and throw things out when they've reached the end of their lifetime, especially liquid liners & mascara.  Shared makeup can transmit cold sores, and you can get nasty eye infections if your products get germs in them.

Urban Decay has a new lipstick line that is the BOMB. They specifically have a lipstick color called F-Bomb that I think is even more intense than Russian Red. I also like Chanel's Gabrielle - a very pretty true red and a gorgeous formulation.  I wear predominantly MAC and Urban Decay. I find that Urban Decay has more intense pigments if you want a very dramatic look. I do also love Benefit's brow box and Urban Decay's eye primer - it will really set your eye makeup for all day!

I'm a total UD Junkie! If I had all the money in the world, it would be split 50/50 on pinup clothing and UD makeup.

The next thing I have to say about skin care should be prefaced with this…

I'll probably make it on someone's hit list for saying this, but I actually use oil on my face.

Hear me out first. I use a mixture of 100% pure Jojoba oil, 100% pure Grapeseed oil, 100% pure Almond oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, and 100% PURE Essential Lavender oil. I apply it with a folded up paper towel by dabbing it on my skin. I have skin that gets so irritated by the littlest things, that I have to stick to one specific brand of makeup because I know their products won't irritate my skin. Still, living in Southern California, when there's an inversion layer in the air (heavy smog), my skin goes crazy. I already have very clear skin (gotta love my genes), but I have to be extremely careful that I don't irritate my skin with something that I've never used before. That's why I love Sephora. They will give you samples to try, and I am eternally grateful for that. I don't have to worry about buying a product only to have to waste time, money, and gas just to return it because it caused my skin to get super dry. Still, when I do try a new product that I got a sample of from Sephora and it dries my skin out, I just use my oil mixture and a paper towel to get rid of it. Also works on the corners of your mouth and nose when the seasons and weather changes and causes you skin to dry out.

I don't do a full face of make-up every day anymore. I always wear a tube formula mascara (I like the one in the red and white container by L'Oreal. It stays put while I sweat in the gym, but isn't hard to get off like a waterproof mascara.) If I'm just running errands and stuff, I just wear a tinted moisturizer, a little of bit of concealer under my eyes and over any red spots, some blush and a red lip in addition to the mascara. I'm quite the collector of Revlon's red lipsticks. I just like the idea that this color has actually been around since the era's I'm inspired by. After reading through this thread though, I might have to get a MAC Russian Red to to try though!

If I am doing the full Betty, I'll use a primer and actual foundation (I actually really like Revlon's photoready primer better than Smashbox one I used to use, but I'm still on the hunt for a foundation I love.) I'll contour with bronzer (Benefit Hoola), and do eyeshadow and liner (Urban Decay fan here as well). I like using an eyeshadow primer as well. I've always used Too Faced Shadow Insurance.
