Halp!!! I'm having major issues trying to style my hair in a vintage style. Any vintage style. I've tried pin curls, pillow rollers, foam rollers and no dice. I've even tried hot rollers and get less than a half hour of curl before it goes flat. My routine: I wash my hair and condition with no sulfate products. I towel dry. I then spray my hair with 1 part Lottabody setting spray to 5 parts water. I then roll my hair. I put a hair bonnet on and sleep in the set. When I wake up, I take the rollers out and start to comb through the hair. Here's where the problem starts. It frizzes. And I know that's supposed to happen and that you are to comb until there isn't any frizz. Well when I do that, my hair no longer has any curl. As in, it's straight. And that's with having a setting spray.

I have not tried any other setting lotions. But when ever I put in any product like styling mousse or gel or shine lotion my hair turns into an oil slick. Even the Lottabody does it. And then I need to wash my hair the next day.

So any advice on products or ways to keep the curl? I've watched Youtubers TheCherryDollFace, Lisa FreemontStreet, A Vintage Vanity and even Micheline's DVDs and none have helped. I'm at a loss. Any help would be GREAT!!!

Thank you lovelies!!!

I would suggest 3 things to try. 1) Start on day old hair. Clean hair doesn't like to hold curl as well as day old. 2) Up your setting lotion just a smidgeon. You don't want too much, because that can weigh down your hair and pull out the curl just as much as too little setting lotion can fall flat. 3) My ultimate tool... perm rods. They are cheap and for me, bring the closest thing to an authentic curl outside of the actual pin curl. Here is a link to my latest tutorial video. Hopefully it will help a little. Good luck! Bombshell Hair Tutorial

Just watched your video, very helpful! I love that you use a long skinny make-up brush to make the straight lines in your hair!

Hey thanks! I am glad it helped! I am a big fan of use what you got and the makeup brush is what I have. :)

You mention combing out, do you actually use a comb? I find I get the best results brushing out using a natural boar bristle brush. Also, have you tried using a lighter conditioner - such as a leave in spray version? Heavy conditioners can create too much weight if you're curling and brushing on newly washed hair.

I know there are some people who find these to be very strange, but I decided to give them a try and so far I have found that they are the best way to curl my hair! They are called Curlformers. My hair does not like to be curled, it almost always falls out. With these I get a lot of bouncy girls with out having to use a lot of product. They are kind of spendy, so I would suggest buying them from somewhere that you can return them if they don't work for your hair. (I'm honestly not sure where- maybe Sally Hansen? I didn't think to check the return policy when I bought them there). Be sure you get the ones that are long enough for your hair.

To use these, get your hair damp and put them in (you thread your hair through the tubes... It comes with directions. :)). Blow dry your hair and wait for it to cool completely before taking them out. You can also put them in over night (not sure how comfortable that would be) or leave them in through out the day and let your hair dry naturally. They take a bit of practice but they've been way more successful for me than anything else for me. This blog has more information about them. http://charlottesavenue.blogspot.com/2011/12/january-hair-carnival-...

 Good luck!

Thanks ladies! I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you, I've been dealing with some health issues. So.... let me start....

@Lolita I have done a set on a day old hair and it still frizzes. I noticed in your video the curls came out near perfect when you unrolled them. Perfectly formed, no frizz. But when I unroll mine, the hair is frizzed already. And they aren't nicely formed curls no matter what I use to curl them. In experimenting, I've used both too little and too much setting lotion and it doesn't make a difference. And when I do a really tight curl, I get that poodle look, which on me not so cute.

@Emmy I use a paddle brush with plastic teeth. Similar to this one.

Straighten & Shine Paddle Brush I've tried a boar bristle brush and it beats the crap out of my hair. Even when I'm not doing a vintage set, it frizzes and pulls out my hair. I've used many different conditioners and they all do about the same thing.  :/

@Nikki I've seen the Curlformers at Sally's but never really knew how to use them. I just watched a video on how to use them and I have hand problems and I don't think I would be able to use those with out my hands hurting.

I know that doesn't help much but I'm actually thinking about contacting The CherryDollFace about doing a private lesson. I know she just posted something today about doing Skype lessons.

An Update:

I purchased more clips and have done a more proper pin curl. I had WAY less frizz. I still had frizz at the bottom of my hair but I had less. Even the sections that don't really take the curl had more bends. I used Motions Setting lotion on wet hair after I washed and used LottaBody to re-wet. I used LayRite pomade and One 'n Only Oil Spray Treatment for hold. It took me about 2 hours to do my entire head. I had to take breaks because my hands and shoulders didn't really like what I was doing. I am thinking about getting some kind of Middy cut. I currently have a grown out Bettie Page look, longer bangs parted in the middle.

I am hoping that with some kind of modified Middy Cut, I can do a more true vintage style. I'm a bit nervous about cutting my hair.
