I bought these yesterday:

I am brand new to vintage styling and have realllllly long hair... It is practically impossible for me to keep it curly, but I don't want to cut it yet.... My question is, will these curlers give me the bounce I need to achieve vintage looks, or do you think they are the wrong type of curl? They cost $65 and I am feeling pretty guilty about the price... My husband and I are college students and I am just not sire if the curlers were worth the investment. What should I do to get the vintage hair look we all love? I would love to master something like victory rolls, but I am definitely not there yet! My hair is longer than this, but something similar to this is what I am trying to do......

Thank you ladies!!!!<3

I too have really long hair and it is virtually impossible to get these types of curls!
So sorry I am no help but I can't wait to see the replies!

For the price you spent on those twist curlers, why not get yourself a set of hot rollers? I think I paid about $50 for my set. OR you could even just get a 3/4 or 1 inch curling iron and a big pack of pincurl pins. I've got no experience with the twist curlers though.

My hair used to be past the middle of my back and I was able to achieve similar waves as the top image. I use some curl setting spray first. Curl your hair with the iron and slip it off the iron and pin it to your head with the pins, once you are done curling and setting your hair, spray a little bit of hairspray on it. I found that by curling and setting my hair first and getting dressed and doing the makeup will allow your hair to cool down while it's pinned and it'll set and last longer. After that you can lightly brush it with a smoothing brush and shape it to your liking. For the bangs of the top image, curl your bangs to the direction you want it to curl to and make sure they are elevated curls.

The bottom image can be achieved by doing an overnight wetset with a setting lotion and the pincurl pins. For both looks I suggest you look for tutorials on youtube, there's alot of helpful ones! I hope it helps :)

Are pincurl pins different than regular bobby pins? That may sound like a silly question but I'm just very uneducated about these things ;)... I have a 1 inch curling iron, and that works okay, but the curls usually fall out... I have never tried pinning them before though so I will have to give that a try. Is a smoothing brush different than a regular brush? Thank you for all your help!

Yep! Pincurl pins are different from regular bobby pins. They do not have any ridges, are wider and flatter than a bobby pins. You need to pinch them open. You can use bobby pins but i wouldn't suggest it, I tried that once when I first started pincurling my hair and found that those ridges left dents on my curls when I took them out :(  Here's how the pin curl pins look

When I use a curling iron to curl my hair I pin them still curled and elevated to my head like this. Please excuse the bad lighting but it shows you roughly how it looks.
I found a smoothing brush really helps with brushing out pin curls! My hair is very prone to tangle and with a regular paddle brush I felt like it was ripping my hair out! I use this smoothing brush from Sally's! I'm saving my pennies for the one that Dita uses which is the Mason Pearson line!  http://www.sallybeauty.com/boar-bristle-brush/SBS-217310,default,pd...

Keep in my mind, the smaller the roll, the tighter the curl! For big soft waves make big rolls.

For pincurls I find I do my sets similar to this one:

When I use my curling iron it's very similar to Cherry Dollface's method except I incorporate my bangs into the rolls and roll them the way I want them to curl towards:

Hope this helps :)

Oh my heavens you are amazing. Thank you so much for all your advice!! I will pick up some pincurl pins and give it a go! The picture is great- I love your makeup! You have been so helpful, I can't thank you enough :).

Ive just been doing some digging on youtube and found this lady http://www.youtube.com/user/oakoscar100 she does the hair style you are after and loads more. I am absolutely rubbish at doing my hair and I reckon even I could follow her tutorials. Have a watch and see what you think. Good Luck!
