Hello there lovelies! So, I'm really very new at vintage hairstyling and here's this one style I am in LOVE with and I absolutely cannot seem to get it right: Dita von Teese's big loose curled under wave that seems to wrap all the way around her head.

This is the style I'm trying to knockoff. And here's BabyWinny doing a tighter/shorter version of it:

I've been following Lisa Freemont's 40s pageboy tutorial and here's a drawing of the end result of what I get whenever I try it.

I cannot seem to get the hair to curl under or form a single wave. Instead, after brushing out I get a number of very large rolls that remain up and down ringlets. Sort of like bigger, looser 1840s hair. On several occasions I have brushed my hair literally for over an hour and I can tell you they're incredibly durable, they barely frizz at all and don't easily lose their shape, but no matter how I try to brush them into place they stay as these ringlets instead of ever going "horizontal." (The durability I can only guess comes from my hair being naturally curly so it likes to keep a shape.)

The closest I've gotten to the hairstyle has always been using foam rollers overnight, so that's what I'm using primarily. I'm wondering if the trouble is the direction in which I'm setting my rollers? I've been placing them against my head so they sit horizontally and rolled towards my face, but I'm wonder if placing them in your hair vertically/up and down could make a difference?

If anyone has mastered this style and could give me some tips I would be forever in your debt. Thanks for reading this!

Dita actually has a great tutorial on her website if you're willing to pay for access to the website :)

I actually got really good at a pageboy on accident. It's all my hair wants to do without any coaxing. I dunno how much help I'll be for curly hair because my hair is pretty straight. What I've figured is that you need to really brush your hair against and around your hand over and over and over. You also shouldn't do it all at once, Dita brushes it in sections about the size of her hand and then blends them together as she goes to make that sort of curtain effect.

I'll try and post more info later, I have class. haha

Yes, larger curls are a little more conducive to brushing out like that. It really just takes practice but once you get it, it's quite easy :) Lisafreemontstreet actually has pretty fine straight hair so her hair seems to really cooperate with basically anything she wants it to do.

Dita uses hot rollers, but I also think she has straight hair. Plus she does the same style, or at least a variation all the time so she really knows what works for her.

I'm afraid I won't be of any help- I have the same question and am looking for further instruction like you are! :)

First, great style to try to master! I am black, so believe it or not, we curlies have the same issue. With your curly hair, even though you wet it, then set it with a styling lotion ( I am assuming), you are right; your curl pattern will fight you along the way. So here is what works for me, and I do vintage hair ALOT, so I am thinking this method may work for you. first, for the page boy, it is a sleek style with all the curls formed at the ends. To achieve this without having to fight curling is to work with DRY STRAIGHTENED HAIR; if you want the sleek look of the forties, then this is going to be the best way to achieve it. Now, instead of a setting lotion, try a setting CREAM; this is great since it has just enough moisture without TOO much moisture like a setting lotion. I personally use Creamy Set which you can find on amazon or in your local beauty supply. Mizani has one too, just cant remember the name. Anyhoo, Take your hair and manipulate with Small rods or curlers Lisa is right about that; it seems a bit much, but the thing is, they start small so that as the day wears on, the style remains the same; structured. To use loose curlers will allow your hair to fall from this look, no matter what setting lotion/cream you use. Further, when you get to styling in those sections, those tightly rolled ends are going to be holding the hair in place when you go to style the hair into the underneath styling of the pageboy. Section your hair, get a spray water bottle and LIGHTLY spritz the hair-you dont want to undo the straightening- just to moist , then take a bit (about a small peak on your index finger; this stuff is pretty amazing and you do not use alot or your hair will be hair as a brick, lol!) and apply to that section you are curling. Repeat this until you get the achieved pattern. When you take them out, brish through to loosen for manipulation. you will have gorgeous curls that have amazing hold and this should help you achieve this look. Doing it in sections is very important, as the curls need to be uniform and to do so, needs to be done a bit at a time for a uniform look, ironically. And thats it! Here is a link for Creamy Set on Amazon so you can either buy it there or know what to look for in your local store. Best of luck!
