Hello wonderful ladies of the 'Vintage Hair' group :)

I need help with my hair, which isn't unusual - but I wonder if I could do anything vintage-y with it.

Below is probably the most awful "selfie" taken in the history of "selfies", but I hate having my photo taken and the only other recent photo I have of myself is one where I'm doting over one of my doggies and you can't see much hair (on me, at least!).  Welcome to my bathroom, and my "what do I look like" concentration face:

So that is the current state of my hair as seen by the outside world.  The insider details on my hair are:

  • it's really, really baby thin and fine
  • it's feathered around my face, and layered around the rest of my head
  • it doesn't "do" volume (as you can see!)
  • if I do anything with my hair (ponytail, bandanna, Buff, etc) it takes about three quarters of a second for my hair to conform to whatever I've done and I have to leave it like that all day (annoying!)
  • I'd literally just straightened it before I took this photo - throughout the day the ends get a little curve to them, which I personally find really annoying!

Additionally, I already get up at 5am to get ready in time to leave for work at 6.30, so I don't want something really time consuming (currently it's dried & straightened and I'm done!).

In general, I just fancy a change but I don't know how/to what.  I've had a pixie cut before, which was pretty cute I guess (and easy!!), but my OH isn't too keen on short hair; I need it long enough to be able to get it out of the way in some easy form (ref: Buffs & bandanna's) for when I'm walking my dogs; I've had a fringe before, and sort of suited it, but I get a horrid combination of oily forehead and greasy hair :(

So, any ideas or suggestions anyone?

I feel your pain Sammi! :(
Have you tried rag curling your hair? It's easier than pin curling, and you can sleep in them comfortably too. A setting lotion (such as lottabody) will help the curl formation for finer hair too. when you wake, you can brush out (there's a ton of great tutorials for this on youtube) or just run through with your fingers - depending on the outcome you desire.
In terms of hair care, straightening is not a great idea for thin/fine combo hair, and will cause a lot of breakage. Short also makes hair appear thicker (although I don't have particularly fine hair - I had so many compliments about my hair's thickness as soon as I had it bobbed). Have you thought of a razor cut mid-length bob? I know that's not especially vintage-y, but like you mentioned, I can see from your picture that you have a lovely face shape that compliments short hair, (although I know where you're coming from when you mention OH isn't keen!).
Good luck and let us know what you decide on!

I'm not sure how I feel about "curly" hair, I almost got my hair permed a few years ago, but backed out.  It's worth a try though, and this looks easy enough - thanks :)
