I love my red hair but hate the way it fades, I've been considering going violet, burgundy or plum... but haven't touched those colours recently before.

my hair colour is kind of true in my profile picture.

Any bright fashion color like that is going to fade out. Any color period is going to fade out. But I've done a lot of colors over the last few years and I think Violet would be nice, especially with your fair skin tone. I colored mine dark purple a few summers ago and it faded out to a really nice lavender with a lot of dimension. Keep in mind, my hair had been colored and bleached and colored and bleached over and over. This was before I went to cosmetology school so my hair was pretty damaged which affects the porosity of your hair and how well color sticks to it (there is no way that color was ever coming out, my hair was porous beyond belief. I'm shocked I even had hair at all at that point). Just be kind to your hair and get it done professionally, considering you'll definitely have to lighten it. I've attached some pictures of my hair before and after it faded when it was purple. Whatever you choose to do, I hope you'll post pictures!

You need a shower cap!

I recently stared dying my hair again, and it is a *bright* red when I first do it, but within a week it was back to a 'normal' red :(  I recently tried a 'Save the Blow Dry' shower cap, and it is awesome!  I now wash my hair every other day, and have also just used conditioner for the first fortnight from dying it.  Obviously my colour has still run, but not as much as had I shampooed it each morning...in fact, someone (a stranger) at work felt justified in commenting on the brightness of my hair at the end of last week, which means my plan is working! lol
