OK, so at the moment there's a certain Vivien of Holloway circle skirt I'm desperate to own, however on the website the only option is a 32" waist, this is 6" bigger than I'd need it and I'm currently toying with the idea of buying it anyway, and altering it to fit me...but part of me is saying that I won't be able to do it :- is this just my regular self-depreciating voice, or will it really be difficult to take 6" off the waist of a circle skirt?

If it's a true circle skirt, the short answer is yes, it really will be difficult to take 6" off the waist. A circle skirt is a doughnut with a hole. The hole is your waist, you can cut into doughnut and make the hole (waist) bigger, but you can't add to the doughnut, unless you're willing to create and add a waist band of another fabric. I hope that makes sense.

However, all is not lost. If there are any pleats in the skirt, or if you don't mind adding pleats, it can be done fairly easily.

If I saw the skirt I'd probably be able to offer better advice.

It's this skirt: http://www.vivienofholloway.com/en/category/no-pocket/50s-circle-sk...

I was thinking that I could remove & shorten the waistband, and take 6" off each panel (3" off each side, less the seam), following the edge that's there already

That skirt is glorious! Strange though, if you're after the pink rose, it allows me to put a 26" waist in my cart.

My brain is half functioning, of course your plan of action would work, no problem-o. Even easier is if it's a one piece circle, remove and shorten the waist band, pick the seam, shave off the 6" and sew it back up.

I would hate to be in your position, cuz even though I'm pretty good friends with my sewing machine, I really dread doing alterations unless I can get the item for a steal.

I know, it's the black/teal tartan one though; nice & winter-y but not a really obvious tartan.

Hmmm, I shall have to have a think about because - like you - I'm not one to pay that much for something to have to alter it.
