I'm a natural auburn that leans more towards the brown color. I'm dying to dye my hair the same red as Christina Hendricks (aka Joan Holloway from mad men). I've dyed it professionally & at home & it refuses to pick up the red in the dyes or I'm just picking the wrong dye. Anyone have any tips or a color that looks like hers that is tried & true?? Going cuckoo over here trying to get it right! :-(

OK here is my secret to getting this color which I am sporting for about 3 years now. I am a natural medium ashy brown.

I use http://www.sallybeauty.com/mega-reds-haircolor/SBS-500092,default,p... first to get the tone right

and then I use  http://www.sallybeauty.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-SA-Site/defaul...

right after that to intensify the red/orange/copper hue of this color. This is straight up orange and the secret to getting this color as bright and coppery as possible!

When the red fades, I touch up with the Color Jamz orange again, put it in dry or damp unwashed hair and let it sit for 30 mins to an hour. The orange does bleed a lot when washing but the good thing is, this color is not damaging to your hair at all and you can touch up the fading color anytime. Sometimes I just put a little bit in my hair when I shower, super easy.

So that is pretty much it.

If you have really dark hair you might wanna do a less damaging bleach wash before (ask you hair dresser for that one) to get it light enough, but if you have medium to light hair, you should be fine just using the L'oreal mega red.

I hope all of that made sense.

Here's a picture of me with that same hair color.

Holy wowza i'm gonna try your advice because i tried to do it but it went a little bit south by mixing two hair dyes so yeah it didnt quite go the right color but it looks nice anyways thanks for the tips!

you look gorgeous lady!

:)

Hi there, I've recently had my hair coloured Joanie-red and being a natural brunette, I had to have my hair lightened to a copper colour first, then had the tint put on. It cost £120 for the initial colour and is £60 (including blow-dry) every 8 weeks. So it's a real investment but I am super happy with it and wouldn't change it! xx K
