So, I feel really paranoid that teasing my bangs into pompadours, faux Bettie bangs, and other vintage styles is damaging and thinning out my hair. My bangs are a bit below chin length when all the way down. They used to be a little shorter and layered, about at cheek length, but the layered hair was really difficult for me to put up the way I wanted it without ends sticking out everywhere, and I have been too scared to cut my bangs. I have considered cutting my bangs off like Bettie bangs so I can just wear them straight without all the teasing and still have a retro look, but then I chicken out because of the lack of versatility. I also don't want hot and sweaty messy bangs, since I work as a CNA in a nursing home as my day job and it is very strenuous work. What should I do?

Also, I have a bald spot (only has little baby hairs) on my right temple that has been there for years (wayyy before I started styling my hair in any way). I have no idea how to grow it out, but it bothers me since I really don't want a receding hairline:( Any advice?

What kind of shampoo are you using? I'm on medication that thins my hair. And I found if I use shampoo without sulfate, I've seen a reduction in hair loss. You might also want to get some clip in bangs extensions.

Emily has a great point about clip in bangs, then you can tease them as much as you want without damaging your real hair.  It could also help with the thinning hair issue, since it would add bulk to your hair.  I find that a bang length somewhere between the tip of the nose and the bottom lip offers the most versatile styling options, for my hair anyway.  The bangs can be swept to the side, rolled, they're long enough to pull into a ponytail (and off your face).  I love the Bettie bangs, I had them for awhile, but the upkeep is a pain.  They tend to only look good for about a week and then you have to trim them again.

I use Pantene shampoo, although I have only been using it for a few months. The hair loss problem has been going on for a few years now. As for the clip in bangs, my hair colour is natural and dirty blonde. It's really difficult to find clip in bangs that match it so they don't look fake. And I think I am going to take your suggestion about cutting my bangs between the nose tip and bottom lip!:) Thanks!

I don't know which Pantene products you are using but if they have sulfate in them, you will see more breakage. I use l'oreal's EverPure line. It is their sulfate free line. (They are pretty inexpensive, about $7 a bottle.) Also to help reduce hair loss, make sure you are taking Folic Acid and biotin, those help with cell growth. An easy way to get those into your body is by taking prenatal vitamins. (I'm on medications that strip folic acid out of my body and these are things that my doctor has told me will help.)

Laziness on my part, but thank you EMILY for mentioning sulfate-free to avoid breakage. I have long wavy-curl hair prone to dry and also begging for hair dye now to cover pesky greys. I will investigate, including your supplement recommendations.

(Sorry to tack onto your thread CARMILLA — came by as my hair has thinned with age, and have been contemplating bangs, and I suffer too those wee baby hairs and what gives the appearance of balding/receding line at my temples, especially in photos!

For me, beyond the sulfate issue, I have tried to eliminate all heat-related styling - I do my hair in pincurls and curlers, which allows my hair to set for quite a few days with minimal (if any) heat-related touch-ups, as well as only wash my hair 2-3 times a week. I have a lot of hair fall, and have recently been looking for products that will help minimize this - specifically the pantene line. I haven't tried them yet, though. Amazingly enough, coloring helps "restore" my hair, as does allowing the conditioner to sit in my hair during my shower while I do all of the other showering necessities (like shaving legs, exfoliating, etc), which leaves my hair very soft and untangled. I also avoid the teasing as much as possible, and since I use a wet-set with a curl setter, my curls are usually defined enough and set enough that I can pin my hair into curls, rolls, barrels, whatever with minimal teasing and minimal product. For curl setting, I use Miss Jessie's Quick Curl or Pillow Soft Curls (doesn't tend to really hold the curl for more than 2 days) or Jelly Soft Curls. Miss Jessie's products are not chemically altering, which also helps with less damage to your hair.  I too have the appearance of a receding hairline (I'm only 36!), but I have learned that this is due to genetics more than anything else and there's not a whole lot I can do about that. I just style it in ways that don't highlight it and/or hide it.

As for the bangs, this is something I fight with on a regular basis. I agree with Cela - they are difficult for upkeep when they are short (ok, not difficult, but time-consuming, annoying... those things) and you don't have a lot of options when it comes to styling. For me specifically, bangs that short tend to make me look younger (which you'd think is a good thing, but I already look younger than my age, and I don't want to look any younger - I love my age!). I have been playing around with getting clip in bangs, which will quell my urge to cut as well as give me more styling options. Right now (I've just had a trim), my bangs hit between my mouth and chin. This works for almost all the styles I want to do (except Bettie Bangs, lol) and like Cela said, allows for the just pulling them into a ponytail when needed option. I've worked medical in your position, and I agree - there's no time for hot and sweaty bangs on your forehead, nor do you have the time (or energy!) to do maintenance on your hair... I think clip in's are the way to go, although I'm not really sure how to help you with the color option. I think it's just assumed nowadays that almost everyone colors their hair, so more "natural" hair colors don't really exist anymore.

Do post pics of what you decide to do!!

I agree with the other girls, my bangs are perfect at nose length. I have oily skin and hair so when I cut my bangs short it just looks like greasy strings on my forehead, not a good look! So now I have grown them out, on days I don't want to tease or curl them I can just pin them back so they are out of my face.

Ok, just washed my hair... I used a mixture of shampoo/color to help keep the red from fading (my hairstylist told me to take a travel size bottle of shampoo & add my hair color to it when I color my hair, then use the mixture to help keep the color bright... we were mainly talking about colors like purples & blues, but she said that reds do well with this too, and this is the 2nd bottle I've "created," and thus far, she's right and I love it!) - the shampoo was Herbal Essences Color Me Happy, which has sulfates in the top 5 ingredients. The conditioner I was talking about above is Pantene Pro-V Protect & Repair Conditioner, with methosulfate in the last 5 ingredients. I did notice that when I got out of the shower, I did have a lot less hair fall/breakage than normally do, but still had some (I don't think it's going to fix my hair in one shot!). I did what I mentioned about letting it sit for anywhere from 3-5 minutes while I did the rest of my shower routine, and right now, I'm letting it chill in my hair towel until it's just damp enough to do my wet-set/curlers. If you're interested in how it continues to work, let me know and I'll keep ya posted!

I don't know if this helps you or not, but when I use Pantene my hair falls out!

I'd say maybe cut them at eyebrow length or bridge of your nose. That way they're more versatile and you probably wouldn't have to tease them as much if you decided you wanted bumper bangs.

Clip in bangs are another good option- I've had bangs my whole life though, so I've never tried them.

Also, back to hair care. You should check out the Palmer's coconut hair mask. You can get it at Target, for like $1.50 or something ridiculous.

This is my first post here, so I hope it helps someone!

You can start using natural shampoos and conditioners for your hair as well as biotin and certain vitamins that will help your hair to grow. Also you can hide your thin hair by using the clip in extensions that are easy to put in and provides longer and fuller hair instantly.

I have heard good things about hairplusbase - they are pretty expensive though www.hairplusbase.com
